The Mergui Archipelago which belongs to Myanmar( formerly Burma) is a very expansive group of Islands (+/-800) in the Andaman sea. This area offers visitors amazing scenery both above water and below. From islands that are populated by the minority group known as Moken sea gypsies to unpopulated outcroppings and limestone and granite boulders. The area is relatively new and undiscovered and although a few dive operators have been operating trips to Burma since 1997 very few boats go north of Black Rock and very few guides know much of what the area really has to offer. Another refreshing note is that at time of writing it was possible to do a 9 day trip without seeing another dive boat. With the underwater scenery very similar to some parts of the Similans guests will be uniquely surprised at the diversity of marine life and dive sites and although the area is not a marine park, at times more pelagic fish than Marine Parks in Thailand. Although most operators now offer Black Rock as a part of their schedule it is very important that visitors to the area ensure the dive and boat crew have some knowledge of the area as the remoteness of the area and the fact that help awaits only once you have cleared back into Thailand should be a big part of which operator to choose a trip with.
